| Lisbon
is one of Europe's major golf destinations. We went to Lisbon to put together
a golf package that we feel, as golfers ourselves, would appeal to the majority
of holiday golf groups. The
Resort Cascais is a charming seaside town of quality on the Lisbon Golf
Coast, with plenty of bars and restaurants in all price ranges for after-golf
entertainment. It is superbly located for all golf courses. There is also an excellent
metro train service right into downtown Lisbon. A return ticket to Lisbon costs
just 2.60 euros.
The Hotel We picked the Bay Hotel for it's location,
next to the beach and in the heart of the town. Numerous bars and restaurants
are on the doorstep, and the metro train station into Estoril and Lisbon is 5-minutes
walk. Underground parking available, and breakfast included. The
Golf Courses (Distances from Cascais in kilometres in brackets) Quinta
da Marinha. (Cascais 2 kms) Robert Trent Jones' well-established 1984 seaside
course, mainly level parkland and heathland with several lakes, and views to the
nearby Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra mountains. See picture right.
Oitavos
(Cascais 2 kms) A new course that has been widely hailed as one of the finest
courses in Portugal, and one of the best links courses in mainland Europe, Despite
it's youth, it is already ranked 33 in Golf World's "Top 100 Courses in Europe".
A genuine links challenge next to the Atlantic Ocean. But the highest green fee
in the area. Penha
Longa. (Cascais 7 kms) This Robert Trent Jones Jr. course is well established
as one of Portugal's top half-dozen courses, and a must for most visiting golfers
to the Lisbon area. Laid out over mountain foothills, around a 14th century palace,
many historic features remain, including an ancient aqueduct behind the 6th green.
Estoril
(Cascais 7 kms) A piece of golfing history, Estoril was laid out in 1945 by
Mackenzie Ross, famous for his restoration of Turnberry. Wooded, undulating parkland
with sea views. A classic design, contrasting with the american influence on other
courses locally. No buggies.
Beloura (Cascais 7 kms) A well-presented
and maintained course by american William Roquemore. Mainly level, it suffers
scenically from being in a development, but it's modest green fee will help keep
your costs down.
Belas (Cascais 25kms) Considered a triumph for
designer Willaim Roquemore, this 1997 course combines modern course design techniques
of the highest standard with a superb setting just outside Lisbon. Open rolling
slopes among much water and sand.
