Eastern Algarve

Until recently, the east was not of interest to the golfer. But a clutch of fine new courses has been constructed between between Faro and the spanish border, and the situation is changing. This area is also the most authentically portuguese stretch of the Algarve, having been little changed by tourism.

Quinta da Cima

Named in the 2004/5 Peugeot Golf Guide as the best course in Portugal, this William Roquemore championship course is rapidly gaining an international reputation. With it's sister course, Quinta da Ria, being named by Peugeot as joint-second best course in the country also, the Eastern Algarve now has much to offer. It is the more inland of the two courses, and although the newer, looks quite establish due to many character trees incorporated into the design and the challenge. Designed to host tour events.

Our verdict: a real star, get there now before everyone hears about it.

Championship tees 6,256 metres; men's 6,045; women's 4,971

Handicap ; Men 28 Women 36

Quinta da Ria

Completed in 2002 just before Quinta da Cima (below) it is an attractive and quite open course, and several holes border a very attractive stretch of the Atlantic. The water holes will test your strategy, and the greens are testing - good putting is vital for a low score here. Lower handicap players will be enjoy it, but it is also not as intimidating as some Algarve courses for higher handicap players.

Our verdict: one of the Algarve's finest, with great views.

6,110 metres

Par 72

Handicap ; Men 28 Women 36

Benamor

Based on an original design by Sir Henry Cotton, this millennium course is located in open countryside with views of the ocean and the mountains, deserves to be better-known.

Our verdict: an enjoyable course for mid and higher handicap players. Better players might find it a bit short.

5,500 metres

Par 71

Handicap ; Men 28 Women 36

Castro Marim

This millennium course is the most easterly in the Algarve, overlooking the spanish border. It is in a spectcacular setting, with commanding views from the elevated tees of the Atlantic and across the Guandiana river estuary into the spanish region of Andalucia. It might at first look intimidating, but it is not the longest, and is a more forgiving course than it appears. We hear another 18 holes are planned here.

Our verdict:
not so well known, because of it's location, but worth playing for the views alone.

5,466

Par 72

Handicap ; Men 28 Women 36

Isla Canela

This course is actually just over the border in Spain. It is mostly flat, and located at the mouth of the river that forms the border between Portugal and Spain, and has a growing reputation.

Our verdict: well worth a round if you are staying in the eastern Algarve.

Recent additions:

Colina Verde is a 9 hole par 28 "executive" course with sea views.
